Magic

The Full Story

As a father, I wanted to create a basketball program for my sons that would mirror the one that shaped my life back in junior high. In 1995, I played in the JBL league under the guidance of my coaches, Steve Dye and my dad, Carlos Solomon. Our team, the Orlando Magic, wasn’t just about basketball—it was about brotherhood and a rite of passage that left a lasting impact on me.

When I searched for something similar for my sons, I came up empty-handed. I knew I couldn’t do it alone as a coach, but I was determined to find the right resources. After watching my son’s 4th-grade team underachieve, Coach Tony and I made a promise to step in the following year. With a push from Laura, Coach Tony’s wife, who held us accountable despite our busy schedules, we delivered. That season, we went undefeated and won it all.

From there, things took off. We joined Michigan Youth Basketball, where we were fittingly named the Magic. That’s when everything started aligning—just like it had for me years ago. I became my dad, and our team became the Magic. Along the way, destiny brought together the right players and supportive parents to carry out this mission.

Fast forward to today, over 100 games later and a 75% winning record, we’ve realized that we’re not just coaches—we’re family. Watching our student-athletes rise to become some of the top players in the county has been incredible. But our focus goes beyond basketball. We’re dedicated to helping these young men excel as students, siblings, sons, and ultimately, as recruitable athletes ready for the next level.

We are the Motown Magic, a 13U private basketball club with a purpose that transcends the court. Welcome to our journey.
