This week in the Magic Universe, we had the pleasure of bonding as a team during a fun outing at 5 Star Lanes Bowling Alley on Dequindre and 16 Mile. It was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect and strengthen our camaraderie as we gear up for the next leg of our journey. Our goal is to schedule a team outing once a month during our 90-day runs, fostering stronger relationships and maintaining team spirit.
We also received our team uniforms this week and are currently working through fittings and any necessary adjustments. With our first tournament just two weeks away, things are beginning to come together, though we still have plenty of ground to cover.
Excitingly, we’ve added two crucial players to the roster: Alvis Wilson and Braxton Humphreys from Algonquin Middle School. Their presence brings much-needed size and toughness, qualities that will be essential for overcoming the challenges we’ll face in the coming season.
Our focus this week has been on game scenarios and strategic responses. The goal is to help the boys develop a strong basketball IQ, encouraging them to use plays as tools for problem-solving. I challenged the team to dive deeper into their playbooks and think critically about how to execute plays effectively. It went well, and I urge you to encourage your players to review their playbooks and come to practice with questions. Dan stood out this week for his familiarity with the playbook and his insightful questions—everyone should aim to match his level of preparation.
We also launched a leadership challenge. Before the tournament, I’ll be naming two captains based on communication, attitude, and attention to detail. These captains will receive certain benefits, which we are still defining, along with added responsibilities. Developing leadership and communication skills is a priority, and we are working on establishing a structured leadership curriculum for the team.
Additionally, I’m sending out an invitation for a shooting club session on Saturday, February 8, at 9 a.m. at Compound Athletics. The session, led by the highly skilled Coach Rob Banks, costs $28 per player and runs for 1 hour and 30 minutes. The focus will be on shooting techniques and what it truly means to be a shooter. While attendance is optional, I believe this session is well worth the investment of time and money.
Lastly, we are planning to add a round of Greg Grant Basketball to our calendar, which will run concurrently with the MWA AAU League. Greg Grant games will take place on Saturdays, while MWA games will be held on Sundays. If anyone has concerns or is unable to participate in both leagues, please reach out to discuss this privately. While this was not part of the initial plan, we believe it will be highly beneficial for the team’s development.
Let’s keep pushing forward, growing stronger together, and preparing for success in the upcoming tournament. Thank you all for your continued support and dedication.
